Interest in pathogen population genetics has grown considerably over the past 10 years as its principles are integral in achieving sustainable disease management in global agroecosystems. However, the topic is rarely covered in plant pathology courses and hasn’t been introduced in plant pathology textbooks or other educational materials. The Population Genetics of Plant Pathogens CD-Rom is a culmination of six years of work by a leader in this field of research, offering a unique opportunity to integrate principles of population genetics into the plant pathology curriculum.
Population genetic analysis has provided fresh insights leading to revisions in disease cycles and control methods for many important pathogens. In this course clear explanations are provided for the five evolutionary forces (mutation, genetic drift, gene flow, reproduction system, and selection) and many examples are presented illustrating how these forces operate alone and in combination to determine the genetic structure of populations of plant pathogens. In addition, the final section of the course shows how to apply knowledge of pathogen population genetics to improve management of plant diseases.
The logical progression of concepts from basic topics (mutation) to the more complex (reproduction and mating systems), examples that help connect the theory of population genetics and its application in plant pathology, and simple mathematical models that illustrate how mathematical expressions are developed for measuring population genetic parameters, make this CD-Rom understandable and easy-to-use. Students will also benefit from “knowledge tests” and reference lists for each section, as well as hyperlinked topics and glossary that make it easy to learn or refresh knowledge of terms and concepts.
Population Genetics of Plant Pathogens CD-Rom is an excellent educational aid for training the next generation of plant pathologists as well as better informing the current generation of plant health practitioners. Plant Pathology students, teachers, and professionals; instructors and practitioners of Plant Breeding; and departments of Plant Pathology and Agronomy will all benefit from the expert knowledge provided in this new teaching tool.
Personal Use version and Personal Use 5-Pack version (for instructors who wish to distribute CDs directly to their students) also available.
