Basado en el best-selling, el Illustrated Dictionary of Mycology publicado por la APS Press en 2000, el Nuevo Diccionario Ilustrado de Micología, en español, se ha actualizado y ampliado para incluir definiciones y derivaciones etimológicas de casi 5.000 términos micológicos. Más de 1,750 ilustraciones y fotografías ayudan a clarificar las definiciones de muchos de los términos. Cada término en español incluye su término equivalente en inglés, ayudando a estandarizar la terminología micológica en ambos idiomas y dando a este recurso una funcionalidad bilingüe. Además, cuando son apropiados, los términos opuestos y/o relacionados se dan para la mayor comprensión.

Una nueva y útil característica de la edición española es la inclusión de una lista de más de 1,100 especies de hongos, que se ilustran a través del texto principal del diccionario. Esta lista indica en qué término se puede consultar información relacionada con ciertas estructuras, fenómenos biológicos, u otras características que representan a una especie particular.
